The pilgrimage

“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; none but ourselves can free our mind.”
Tara Westovers《Educated》was strongly recommended by Bill Gates, and it is a book about the quest of ones SELF: the positive liberty and self-mastery, the rule of self by the self. It is an arduous journey that ended with positivity and peace.
Taras pilgrimage is not a typical one, mixing primitive violence with poverty, ignorance and absurd drama, unfolding unexpectedly in the junkyard of the isolated Bucks Peak. Tara must has many lives, to be able to escape, survive and thrive to become a shining star, who writes history and makes history. Nothing is impossible, the little girl who was dreaming on the swing, made her dream into reality.
When I was reading the book, memories of the dark moments of transition-periods kept flashing back. from the small village to the metropolitan Shanghai, to Singapore, to Oxford. The struggle to fit in is as vivid as yesterday, the awkwardness, the loneliness and the desperate desire to achieve. I am deeply touched with every stretch of Taras journey, the harassed and depleted yet not surrendering girl. As Tara said: everything of any significance that you will do in your life, will be done by your un-instagramable self . We are lucky to have come this far, and will get even stronger along the way.
I watched the interview of Tara with Bill Gates, Tara looks so beautiful and confident. SMART is the new SEXY. I am so happy for her, for becoming Dr Westover and finding inner peace within the selfhood.
We are all educated in different ways, and education is the only way forward, esp for children from poor family. It is the magic wand for Pygmalion, the fuel and the transforming catalyst. You are who you think you are, if  you believe in yourself. Keep going and hang on, you will also arrive, one day.
Quote:
“I can stand in this wind, because I’m not trying to stand in it,” I said. “The wind is just wind. You could withstand these gusts on the ground, so you can withstand them in the air. There is no difference. Except the difference you make in your head.”
PS: I love the way Tara describes things, such as: Rome is a city that is both a living organism and a fossil. The unforgiving mountains, the dipping sun, blending on the canvas of rolling clouds.
