杨永珍、刘旭光主编的《化学化工专业外语》的内容设定，是在综合比较现有若干版本的专业外语教材的基础上，针对理工科院校化学化工类硕士研究生专业外语课程的内容要求和学时要求，从基础化学入手，在积累一定辞彙量的基础上，用较多的篇幅介绍仪器分析的专业外语，从而有助于处于第三学期论文调研阶段的硕士生更好地进行课题调研。
